Tram 28 – see Lisbon from the Elétrico

Want to see Lisbon through the eyes of the locals? You can! Take tram 28 (official name: Elétrico 28E). It is quite an experience to go with this tram through the narrow streets. Line 28 frequents all the historic neighbourhoods of the city. But hold on tight, because even though the streets are narrow and the slopes steep (14%), the driver keeps a good pace!

Tram ride along all sights

The whole journey takes about 50 minutes, while you cross the city from east to west and pass all the famous sights in Lisbon. That is the main reason it’s so popular with tourists.

Baixa, from here it goes towards Alfama. During the ride through Alfama, the tram travels through some of the city’s most picturesque streets and squares. Especially the street Rua das Escolas Gerais and the square Largo das Portas do Sol with the miradouro are particularly beautiful. The square gives you a beautiful view over the river, the hill and the Castelo de São Jorge.

The tram then continues past the Sé Cathedral and the Santo António Igreja and takes you to the Baixa district, the heart of Lisbon.

Tram 28 - Chiado
From the Baixa the tram starts the climb to the Chiado along Praça Luís de Camões. The area around this old square is nowadays known as an elegant neighborhood, visited by both tourists and locals for shopping. From the Chiado the tram continues to the Estrela district to the top at Campo de Ourique (Prazeres), and from there back to Martim Moniz.

You can use the tram as a hop-on hop-off, discover the city by getting off at one of the more than 30 stops. eléctrico 28 is a cheap option to discover the city, you can use a Viva Viagem card, a
Lisboa Card or a hop-on hop-off ticket to check in on the tram.

Even outside the high season there may be a queue to get on the tram. Not only tourists take this tram, locals are also known to use it. Be careful when you take the tram, there are pickpockets active on the line and they are very good at what they do!

How much does ride on Tram 28 cost?

A ride with tram 28 will costs you about € 3.00*. This is the standard fare for every tram in Lisbon. You can buy a ticket from the tram driver or via the machine on board. An easier way is to pay with a Viva Viagem card, a magnetic and reloadable travel card, very similar to an Oyster card.
