Oceanário de Lisboa: Europe’s largest aquarium

II still remember the first time we went to Oceanário de Lisboa. We were in the car, with the smell of chicken around us. We’d bought some at Jardim dos Frangos in Cascais and took it with us for lunch during our trip to Lisbon.

I was truly a bit excited: the Oceanário in Lisbon was named best aquarium in the world by Tripadvisor And it’s the largest indoor oceanarium in Europe!

You can find the Oceanário de Lisboa in Parque Das Nações One of the themes in this area is the protection of the oceans. In many places you are subtly reminded of the fact that oceans won’t be clean and healthy if we don’t do something about it. You should take a good look at the buildings and pavements.

The standard walking route in the aquarium takes you to the main attraction: a water tank of 7 meters high with a capacity of more than 5 million liters!

You can walk around the tank on multiple levels, there is always a huge window around through which you can marvel at the contents of the tank.

The inhabitants of the aquarium

You can discover up to 100 different species in this aquarium: from sharks to rays to a huge moonfish.

And the nice thing is that you can view them from all sorts of different angles, without having the idea that you are looking at a tank with water. The diameter of the largest aquarium in the Oceanário de Lisboa is so enormous, you can’t see the other side. Impressive!

In total you will find more than 450 animal species in the Oceanário de Lisboa, spread over a total of five water tanks.

ZAs you can see I am a big fan of aquariums. And our daughter of then 2 years old also really liked the Oceanário! With every window she tried to stand up to the glass so that she could see the fish from as close as possible. She pointed out everything she saw and was clearly very impressed. A day at Oceanário is a trip for the whole family.

Feeling of space

As far as I am concerned, the sense of immensity of the oceans is nowhere represented so good as in the Oceanário de Lisboa. Every time we go there I am overwhelmed by how big and impressive it all feels.

This aquarium is truly the best and most beautiful aquarium in Europe!
