Arco do Triunfo da Rua Augusta is the gateway to the Baixa district, with Rua Augusta as its main street.
DThe arch was built after the 1755 earthquake that destroyed a large part of Lisbon, in particular the Baixa.
The arch rests on six Corinthian columns. Various statues can be found on and around the arch. These images represent figures that have played an important role in Portuguese history. These well-known figures are Vasco da Gama, Nuno Álvares Pereira and Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo.
In 2013 the monument was completely refurbished and since then it can be visited. From Praça de Comércio you will find ticket sales on the right after the Arco.
Tip: Koop je toegangskaartje nu alvast online, dat kan je op drukke dagen weer wat tijd schelen bij de kassa. “Skip the line” noemen ze dat. Kosten: €2,50, net zoveel als aan de kassa. Bestel ze hier
With an elevator you enter the room where you can view the clockwork. A narrow staircase brings you to the panorama roof, pay attention to the traffic lights at the stairs. That way you are sure to not encounter an oncoming person.
A visit to the Arco is more than worth it, make the trip up and enjoy the beautiful view over the Tagus, Alfama, Baixa and Praça de Comércio.
