Lisbon’s first indoor shopping centre, Centro Comercial Amoreiras, was opened in 1985. To us, the futuristic looking building with three equal towers is also one of the ugliest set of buildings in Lisbon.
DThe architect based the design on the Brazilian concept of shopping centres: many small entrances, making it easy to enter. Of course everyone has their own taste, but we are glad that this shopping centre is no longer facing the Tagus. That would have made the beautiful view of Lisbon different.
Shop till you drop
In Centro Comercial Amoreiras you can find more than 250 shops and 50 restaurants, a wellness center and a gym. Many prestigious brands such as Chanel, Apple, Rolex and Calvin Klein have their place here. But also for a smaller budget there are shops like Zara, Bershka and Mango.
Among the locals, centro comercial Amoreiras is a favorite. It is the ideal place for those looking for serious retail therapy. The shopping centre is easily accessible, chicly decorated and located in a central part of the city. The level of service is slightly better than that of other shopping centres in Lisbon.
Although Colombo commercial centre has surpassed the Amoreiras shopping centre in size, and Vasco da Gama Center commercial centre is much more popular, mainly because Amoreiras has a more exclusive feel.
Amoreiras complex
The shopping centre is only part of the large Amoreiras complex. The three towers with their mirrored facades also contain many offices and luxury apartments. At the opening of the complex, the towers were far ahead of their time because of the colossal post-modern style.
Amoreiras 360º Panoramic View
In Amoreiras Towers number 2 you will find the highest viewpoint in the city. This
observation deck is 174 meters high and as the name suggests you can look 360º over the city. For us this was the real attraction and the main reason of our visit to the Amoreiras shopping mall.
Much more to see in the surrounding area
Even though most tourists usually don’t venture further than Alfama, Chiado, Baixa and Bairro Alto it is certainly worthwhile to go to the Amoreiras commercial centre. Not only to see the ugliest building in Lisbon, but there are also many attractions nearby or on the route.
From Praça de Luís de Camões you take elétrico 24 elétrico 24, past Jardim Príncipe Real, Rato, Mae d’Agua en Jardim de Amoreiras. BAt the stop Rua Amoreiras you get off and it is a 10 minute walk.
From Amoreiras commercial centre it is also only a 10-minute walk to Águas Livres Aqueduct.
