One of our favorite parks in Lisbon is Jardim Príncipe Real. Even though it is next to a fairly busy road, Rua da Escola Politécnica, it is a very romantic and quiet park, in the middle of the Príncipe Real district.
This does not seem to be the ideal ingredient for a favorite park, but when you visit this park, the relaxed atmosphere is sure to catch your eye. Around the park are many shops, cafes and restaurants, such as the chic Lisbonlovers, en coffee shop Bettina & Niccolo Corallo.
Charming park in a charming neighborhood
Jardim Príncipe Real is located in the district of the same name: Príncipe Real. The park is the centre of the neighbourhood and that is the reason you will find lots of locals here.
There’s a gigantic tree in the middle, with benches placed beneath its branches. The branches of this tree are kept in place with all kinds of ingenious frames and form a beautiful natural protection against the sun. Especially during the hot days in Lisbon, this is a great place to cool down.
There are many wooden tables and chairs in the park, you can see old men playing games such as chess and cards here.
Refreshments in the park
Even though it is not a very large park, it does have several opportunities for something to eat and drink.
On the main road there are two quiosque to get a snack and a drink. There’s also ample space at the terraces next to the quiosque.
Furthermore the park has its own cafe, called Esplanada Café. At this cafe you can enjoy breakfast, lunch and even dinner. It has a conservatory with a nice view over the park.
Reservatório da Patriarcal
Under the park there is a water reservoir, Reservatório da Patriarcal, built in the nineteenth century. The water reservoir is part of Museu da Água (water museum). You can visit the reservoir on Saturdays. Be sure to make a reservation if you want to do this.
Organic market on Saturday
On Saturday there is an organic market where you can buy fresh, organic fruit and vegetables. Every last Saturday of the month there is a market with homemade items.
Playground
In the back of the park you will find a playground, surrounded with a fence, so that the children can not leave the playground all by themselves. The playground is for children aged 3 to 10 years. It is a nice place that will definitely keep your kids active for an hour or two.
