The Berlangas Archipelago: An Unforgettable Family Adventure

berlengas 009
The Berlangas archipelago, located about 15 kilometers off the coast of Peniche, consists of a group of small islands in the Atlantic Ocean. Berlanga Grande is the only inhabited island and the sole destination accessible to tourists. The island exudes tranquility, history, and stunning natural beauty. Whether you’re looking for a family outing or a romantic escape, Berlanga offers a unique and unforgettable experience. We embarked on our Berlanga adventure with our two daughters, aged 9 and 6. The island had been on my bucket list for a while, and three months in advance, I booked our tickets via GetYourGuide to ensure our trip. We chose the Berlanga island tour, which included a hike and a cave tour organized by Feeling Berlanga. The entire experience, including the boat ride, would take about four hours.

The Boat Ride to Berlanga
At 9:45 AM, we departed from Peniche harbor on a catamaran. Upon arrival at Berlanga, we were greeted by the impressive silhouette of the lighthouse, which is visible from afar. For me, focusing on the lighthouse provided relief from seasickness—my little point on the horizon. As we docked, you immediately feel the serene atmosphere of the island: a small harbor surrounded by mountains, a beach, and numerous small boats ready to take you on an adventure. The buildings near the harbor were once a monastery where monks lived. Berlanga boasts a rich history.

Historical Walk
We began our exploration with a short walk from the harbor to the lighthouse and the old fort. Guided by a local, we heard fascinating stories about Berlanga’s history and landscape. This 45-minute walk is highly recommended. The fort, now a hotel, offers entry for just 1 euro (free for children under 12). It’s a beautiful spot to visit and also an excellent location for snorkeling, thanks to the crystal-clear waters.

Cave Adventure
NAfter the walk, we boarded a smaller boat with a glass bottom to explore Berlanga’s spectacular caves. The journey along the rugged coastline took us past impressive rock formations like the Elephant Rock and the Cathedral, where fishermen once sought shelter during storms. The Cathedral, in particular, left a lasting impression due to its grandeur.

Swimming and Snorkeling
After the cave tour, we enjoyed the clear waters near the harbor. Equipped with our snorkeling gear, we marveled at the vibrant underwater life. It was the perfect way to end our adventure before we headed back to the mainland.

Practical Tips

Traveling from Lisbon
It’s about a 90-minute drive from Lisbon to Peniche. While public transport is an option, we recommend renting a car for more flexibility. Peniche itself may not be the liveliest town, but it’s known for its excellent seafood restaurants where you can enjoy freshly caught fish.

Parking in Peniche
Parking in Peniche is easy. There’s a free parking lot just five minutes from the harbor. During quieter periods, you can even park directly in front of the harbor for a small fee. Be sure to arrive early to secure a good spot.

Book Early
The number of visitors to the island is limited, so make sure to book your tickets well in advance. In the summer months, boats fill up quickly. GetYourGuide offers flexible booking, allowing you to cancel up to a week before departure without charge.

Traveling with Kids
Although the recommended age for this tour is 12, we found it perfectly suitable for our daughters, aged 6 and 9. If you prefer a more relaxed experience, you can always choose to spend the day at the beach.

Preventing Seasickness
For those prone to seasickness, we recommend focusing on the horizon and avoiding alcohol. Eating small, salty snacks can help reduce nausea. The crew is very attentive and will check in on you if you feel unwell.
