n the picturesque landscape of Sintra, where the mystical Serra meets the salty Atlantic Ocean, lies a place that captivates the hearts of travelers and wine enthusiasts alike: Quinta de San Michel. Nestled among the historic vineyards of Colares, this unique location offers an unforgettable blend of tradition, nature, and innovation. We visited this extraordinary vineyard with our two daughters, aged 6 and 9. It was a sensory journey that perfectly captured the essence of Portugal.
A Vineyard with a Mission
Quinta de San Michel, perched in a privileged spot overlooking Serra de Sintra, is more than just a winery; it is a family project that reflects the soul of the region. Located in the historic wine-growing area of Colares, the vineyard benefits from unique climatic conditions that contribute to the production of exclusive wines. These wines not only express the terroir of the land but also play a vital role in the economic and agricultural development of the region.
The mission of Quinta de San Michel extends beyond winemaking. This family-run business is committed to positively impacting the local economy by focusing on innovation, quality, and respect for tradition. Here, traditional techniques are harmonized with cutting-edge technologies, such as eco-friendly methods for protecting vineyards from pests. The result? Authentic wines with distinctive aromas and flavors, crafted with love and expertise.
From Grape to Bottle
The vineyard at Quinta de San Michel was planted in 2013 over an area of two hectares, featuring three native grape varieties: Arinto, Malvasia de Colares (a variety that survived the devastating Phylloxera pest), and Galego Dourado. In 2023, the vineyard expanded by five hectares, with 2.5 hectares dedicated to the iconic Malvasia de Colares and Ramisco varieties, cultivated in the region’s characteristic sandy soils.
One of the vineyard’s crown jewels is the Malvarinto blend, a unique combination of Arinto and Malvasia de Colares. Launched in 2017, this wine stands out for its harmony between two exceptional grape varieties and symbolizes the innovation and quality that Quinta de San Michel represents. All wines undergo a slow maturation process: at least one year in the bottle and two years in the cellar. This meticulous approach ensures that every bottle offers perfect balance and sensory richness.
A Tasting to Remember
During our visit to Quinta de San Michel, we had the opportunity to taste three of their wines: Aristo, Malvarinto de Janas, and Quinta de San Michel. Priced at €15, €20, and €22 respectively (2023), these wines may seem on the higher end but are undoubtedly worth it. Each bottle reflects the unique characteristics of the Colares region: salty, earthy, bold, yet incredibly flavorful.
Aristo stands out for its depth. The Arinto grape, naturally low in aroma, is aged in oak barrels to gain extra character and complexity. With extended bottle aging, the wine develops into a robust and full-bodied experience.
Quinta de San Michel is often referred to as the elegant wine. Its refined aromas, fresh balance, and subtle salty finish make it a perfect blend of complexity and finesse.
Malvarinto de Janas, a blend of Malvasia and Arinto, is the most balanced of the trio. The interplay of the grape varieties delivers a harmonious taste that is both fresh and rich.
