Less than 5 minutes walk from Sé Cathedral vind you will find the supermarket Prado Mercearia.
The idea for the shop (or should we say grocery store) originated with a large project with the Prado restaurant and the Aparthotel Boutique The Lisboans. They’re all situated in the same building.
Back to the past
The interior is beautiful and lends itself to gorgeous photos that seem to come directly from a magazine.
The shop has many elements that make think back, like the wooden counter with glass doors, the antique bowl or the drawers with the spices.
As in many places in Lisbon, nostalgia is the new trend. Shops such as A Vida Portuguesa have already made this come back in the streets, and so have Prado Mercearia.
In 2016, three sisters started the apartment hotel The Lisboans. At the end of 2017 Restaurante Prado was opened in the same building, and right after the restaurant the shop opened as well.
At Prado Mercearia there are many products and ingredients that chef António Galapito uses in the Prado Restaurant. The assortment is extensive: Portuguese wines from different regions, olive oil and honey, vegetables and organic fruit, sausages and cheeses from Azeitão, São Jorge, São Miguel and Serra.
In the rack against the wall you’ll also find various vegetables, grains and homemade muesli, all sold per kilo. Prado Mercearia has different cakes, sandwiches, juices and like every good Portuguese supermarket, canned fish every day.
We bought homemade cookies, one set based on beer and one on red wine. Even though I’m not a beer drinker, the beer biscuits were delicious – perhaps even better than the wine ones.
Prado Mercearia is for people who are looking for Portuguese quality products, for Saudadesistas (people with a sense of nostalgia) and of course for the tourists to take home an original gift.
