NATA Lisboa – the world needs NATA

The Fábrica de Pastéis de Nata Lisboa was not on my list to include in our big pasteis de nata test – that is until I noticed that they opened up a few branches in some european cities in March 2017.

NATA Lisboa

European presence

NATA Lisboa is a Portuguese franchise concept that has multiple locations in Europe. In addition to a few stores in Portugal (Lisbon & Porto) they can also be found in Amsterdam, Barcelona, Paris, Vienna and Antwerp.

In Lisbon, they had a small café between Alfama and Baixa until the beginning of this year, and besides the sale of pastel de nata you could also have lunch and / or drink a cup of coffee. But of course the formula mainly revolves around pasteis de nata. Currently they can be found near Saldanha metro station.

The judgement

After the first bite of the pie it is clear to me that this is certainly not the tastiest pastel de nata I’ve ever had. My travel companion thinks differently and he enjoys the pie. I like the taste and the substance has a filling mouth feel. A plus is that the dough is very crunchy. But this pasteis de nata can not convince me to become enthusiastic about it. There’s just too much flavour missing, the taste is just off.

The pay-off of the franchising is “the world need NATA”. If this were the only pasteis in the world, then I’ll pass.

NATA Lisboa is the number 11 (and last) in our great Pastéis de Nata test.
