Manteigaria Fábrica de Pastéis de Nata has long been on my visit list, but somehow it never happened – either I’d just had lunch and was completely full or we just didn’t pass by this bakery. But in the end the wait was worth it!
Charming little bakery
Manteigaria – from the Portuguese word Manteiga, or butter, is also one of the newer bakeries that sells pasteéis de nata in the city. Since 2014 they have a small bakery located between the Bairro Alto and Chiado. Manteigaria is a charming little bakery where you can buy nothing else but a pastel de nata (and of course a bica).
DThe store is not very big, the bakery itself takes a large part of this place. Which is pretty cool because you can see for yourself how they make the pastéis.
Our judgement
The pasteéis de nata here are very tasty, they’re crunchy and full of flavor. We definitely recommend to get a pastel de nata here instead of going to Belém.
The only “but” we could find is that it’s a bit sweet. It looks like they come pre-sprinkled with sugar. This is not a big problem, but I prefer to eat my pastel without sugar and only with cinnamon. When I put cinnamon on it, they do get the more sweet-neutral taste that I like the best.
Manteigaria Fábrica de Pastéis de Nata is the number 4 our great Pastéis de Nata test
.
