We’re convinced it is always a good time for ice cream. After a visit to Quinta da Regaleira, on a sweltering hot day with our two toddlers, it seemed like a good idea to visit the ice cream shop Gelati di Chef in the middle of the historic centre of Sintra, to cool off.
Gelati di Chef is ideally located on the main square opposite the Palácio Nacional de Sintra.
Expensive ice cream
You can read here that we really like ice cream and it doesn’t really matter how expensive a scoop is, as long as it’s good ice cream.
Still, the prices here (September 2018) shocked us when we entered Gelati di Chef. €3 for 1 scoop, €4.60 for 2 scoops and €6.20 for 3 (that’s £2.60, £4 and £5.30 respectively).
Because we weren’t sure about the taste of the ice cream, we started with a single strawberry scoop for our oldest. And unfortunately this is not the best ice cream we’ve had and that is why we decided to stick to one scoop.
That said, if you are in Sintra then this is a nice place to cool down: inside there is air conditioning and outside there are plenty of shady spots.
Last ice cream in Lisbon at the airport
.
Gelati di Chef also has a branch at Aeroporto Humberto Delgado, Lisbon Airport. Because we are often on time and want to keep our toddler happy, we promise her an ice cream at the airport.
The chocolate flavour is very tasty and the weird thing is that prices at the airport store are lower than in Sintra. For 1 scoop you pay €2.50, 2 balls €4.20 and 3 balls €5.40 (£2.20 / £3.60 / £4.70 respectively).
In our opinion, this is not the best ice cream we have eaten in our career, especially if you look at price-quality. The price per scoop is simply too high for that.
