We are always on the lookout for unique experiences that can inspire others. During our trip to Casal Santa Maria, high in the mountains near Sintra, I discovered a gem of a vineyard where tradition, nature, and wine come together perfectly.
Casal Santa Maria: Wine, History, and Stunning Views
In October 2023, during the off-season, we decided to visit Casal Santa Maria. It was quiet, which made the experience even more special. While the vineyard was bustling with the harvest and wine production, we had the chance to take a tour and taste three different wines. Casal Santa Maria is not just any vineyard – it’s a family-run business with a rich history deeply rooted in the region.
The tour we chose, the CSM Classic Tour, was an ideal way to explore the vineyard and production facilities. This tour, available for as little as €40 for two people, lasted about 75 minutes. We learned everything about their wine production, walked through the vineyards, and got to taste three wines. The tour is offered Tuesday through Friday, and depending on group size, the cost per person can decrease.
We brought along our daughters, aged 5 and 8, to the tasting, and it wasn’t an issue at all.
The Wines: From Fresh to Intense
The wines we tasted were typical of the region – all with that characteristic salty touch so unique to mountain vineyards. Here are the wines I tried and my personal impressions:
The white reserva (2019): This wine had a bold, salty character. It was a robust wine, though a bit too intense for my taste. However, its rich, full flavor makes it a great choice for those who enjoy complex wines. The Reserva has significant depth, so if you love dry wines that pair well with hearty dishes, this is a must-try.
The red reserva: This wine was fresher but also not entirely my style. It had more body and a fuller flavor. While it was enjoyable, I personally lean toward lighter red wines, but this would be ideal for those who prefer robust reds.
Casal Santa Maria Malvasia: This was hands-down my favorite wine of the day! The Malvasia had a wonderfully crisp, salty character. It was refreshing and light – exactly what I look for in a white wine. The balance between acidity and salinity was perfect, and I couldn’t resist taking home a few bottles to enjoy later.
As a bonus, we also got to taste the Rosé Mar de Rosas. If you’re looking for a refreshing start to your wine tasting, this rosé is perfect. It was light, slightly tart, and had a hint of sweetness. It was exactly what you’d hope for in a rosé: accessible and easy to drink.

Pricing and Value: A Wine for Every Occasion
The wines are priced between €10 and €20, which is reasonable for the quality Casal Santa Maria offers. The Malvasia and Pinot Noir are slightly pricier but absolutely worth it. For this price, you get wines that are not only remarkable in taste but also steeped in the story and care of a family-run business.
For those looking for a more extensive experience, the Von Bruemmer Premium Tour is an excellent option. This tour lasts almost two hours, includes six wines, and comes with bread and olives to enjoy. The costs range from €40 per person for two to eight people, and for larger groups, expect around €45 per person. For an even more special experience, you can book lunch or dinner or even host events at the vineyard.
