We love the Bacalhau pastries that you can usually get at any pastelaria. This is something different though, Casa Portuguesa do Pastel de Bacalhau serves a very special Pastel de Bacalhau!
For years we usually walked past this bacalhau pastelaria in the Baixa and never visit it, because I always thought the place was a super tourist hotspot.
But then a local told me that the Bacalhau pastries are very good, and filled with cheese from the Serra da Estrela. Those were all the words I needed to hear to decide to visit this place.
So it turned out we couldn’t wait to finally go to Casa Portuguesa do Pastel de Bacalhau for their special bacalhau pastry.
Combining two traditional Portuguese flavours
The bacalhau pastries are a bit larger than you get in a ‘normal’ pastelaria, and that also makes them more expensive. You pay around 4 euros (£3,50) for 1 pastel.
The bacalhau patty is made according to a traditional recipe, with the big exception that the add Serra da Estrela cheese.
When you reach to the centre of the bacalhau pastry, you can indulge in the melted cheese. And we have to say, it is pretty ingenious to combine these two traditional flavours.
The Casa
Inside, Casa Portuguesa do Pastel de Bacalhau looks very elegant, with mirrors and large chandeliers.
Upon arrival, you can order what you want to eat and / or drink at the counter, and then pick up your order at the other end of the counter.
Grab your chance to walk past the window where the Pastéis are prepared. This is a nice process to see.
