A child-free evening, and finally the time to enjoy a long, leisurely dinner. We went all out at By The Wine – and didn’t regret it. Not cheap by Portuguese standards (around €150 for two people), but absolutely worth it for an evening of pure enjoyment.
Bottles of wine above your head
By The Wine is tucked away in an atmospheric basement in the heart of Lisbon. The moment you step inside, the ceiling catches your eye: an impressive stone arch, completely covered in wine bottles. The vibe is warm, bold, and inviting – like dining in a modern wine cellar full of character.
Wine takes center stage
Here, everything revolves around wine. The menu is impressively broad, with both Portuguese and international wines. Many options are available by the glass, perfect for discovering different flavors. Some special wines are bottle-only, with prices that can exceed €100.
We kicked off our evening with a glass of white wine from the Azores: crisp, vibrant, and full of green apple notes. Not a budget-friendly choice (€9 per glass), but an absolutely perfect match with the food.
Tacos, Pica Pau, and a table full of delights
We started with beef tacos and a plate of Pica Pau – tender pieces of beef meant for sharing. Comfort food at its best.
For the main course, we chose the Iberico Mixed Grill: juicy pork cheeks, belly, and other tender cuts, perfectly cooked and full of flavor. Paired with a smooth red wine, it became a meal to remember. The service – friendly, relaxed, and highly knowledgeable about wine – enthusiastically helped us pick the right bottle.
A mousse de chocolate to die for
To finish, we shared a mousse de chocolate – and not just any mousse. No dainty glass or modest scoop, but a generous bowl full of airy chocolate mousse, served with flair. Rich, pure, and just creamy enough. A perfect ending to a night dedicated to indulgence.
Good to know
Reservations are highly recommended. Without one, you’re likely to wait, especially on weekends. Occasionally, a spot opens up at the bar – where you can also enjoy a full meal, and the experience is just as cozy.
